  4. Geoff Huston provides a bunch of statistics on the Internet address spaces. There are up to date graphs of the IPv4 and IPv6 address blocks, BGP routing tables and autonomous system numbers. Aside of these statistics, the site provides estimations when we will run out of addresses, based upon projected growth rates.
  5. Many readers will have heard about Arjan van de Ven and Auke Kok's work to boot an ASUS Eee 901 in 5 seconds. Inspired by this work, and because I have the same laptop, I decided to try to reproduce their results. So far I have not come very close to their 5 seconds, but I have made some significant improvements compared to the default boot time for Debian on that machine; this article describes what I've done.

  7. There is no reason to use C++ for new projects. However, there are existing projects in C++ which might be worth working on. Weighting the positive aspects of such a project against the sad fact that C++ is involved is a matter of personal judgment. If you end up working with C++, don't try to "fix" it (or "boost" it). You'll just add more layers of complexity. The most productive approach is to accept the problems and try to write simple code which people can easily follow. If you are an expert in the intricacies of C++, please consider this knowledge a kind of martial art - something a real master never uses.
